About
Lona Belle's Art
Lona Belle Atwood was born in Surrey, British Columbia, and raised in the East Kootenays, where a lifelong connection to the outdoors, horses, and wildlife took root. Growing up with a mother who was an oil painter, art has always felt like home. From an early age, Lona explored creativity through drawing and painting, developing both skill and passion that would shape her artistic journey.
Her work is deeply inspired by a life lived outdoors — from western and equestrian scenes to wildlife and sweeping natural landscapes. Lona is drawn to capturing the spirit, movement, and quiet power found in nature, and she especially enjoys the challenge and storytelling involved in commissioned artwork.
Lona has studied under renowned wildlife artists, including Terry Isaac, and further refined her craft during an intensive five-day seminar with internationally celebrated artist Robert Bateman. Her dedication and talent have earned her notable recognition, including:
-
Guide Outfitters of British Columbia – Artist of the Year (2008 & 2010)
-
Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation – Honourable Mention (2014)
In addition to creating her own work, Lona is passionate about teaching. She loves guiding both beginner and advanced artists as they develop their skills, confidence, and creative voice. Whether in group classes or one-on-one instruction, she believes art should be approachable, encouraging, and rooted in joy.
Working primarily in acrylics, Lona also enjoys pencil crayon and ink. For her, every day with a brush in hand is a new adventure — an opportunity to learn, to teach, and to bring the beauty of the western landscape to life.
